What is a Flamboyán Tree?
El Flamboyán, or known in English as a Flamboyant tree, is a dazzling tropical tree famous for its umbrella-like canopy of fiery red and orange flowers – some trees even have bright yellow flowers! The Flamboyán flowers bloom during the summer months, with the most vibrant colors appearing from May through July.
History of El Flamboyán
While deeply iconic in the Caribbean, the Flamboyán tree is actually native to the dry forests of Madagascar. It was the Spanish colonizers that first brought the tree to Puerto Rico and the Caribbean.
In Puerto Rico, the tree is a cherished cultural icon of hope and identity. The roots of a Flamboyán tree run incredibly deep, allowing it to survive droughts and remain grounded through strong winds and hurricanes. It’s also considered one of the fastest-growing flowering trees, shooting up by three to five feet per year and providing vital cooling shade.
The Flamboyán also produces massive woody seedpods that can grow up to two feet long! In the Caribbean, these dried seed pods are commonly known as “shack-shacks” or “machetes” and are often used as natural percussion instruments for playing local music.
