Easy to get to and family-friendly day trips from Rincón, Puerto Rico.
With its beautiful beaches, tropical reefs, and lush green surroundings, a vacation to Rincón is a truly unforgettable experience.
Whether you’re chasing surf, focusing on fishing or diving, or on vacation to simply rest and recharge your batteries, there’s a little something for everyone here in Rincón and across the entire island. Puerto Rico is full of diverse ecosystems, breathtaking views, and rich cultural experiences, and for groups of friends, families, or retreats that are looking to explore a bit outside of Rincón, we’ve put together a list of three day trips that you can easily do from Rincón. Read on to learn more!
1. Explore parts of the mountainous interior of Puerto Rico and check out the San Sebastian Waterfalls.

Just a 45-minute drive from Rincón, the San Sebastian waterfalls, known as Gozalandia, are easy to access, making it a fun adventure for the entire family! There are two main waterfalls connected by a beautiful river that offers a bunch of little “pools” for dipping and lounging along the way. The main waterfall is the largest and the most popular. There is a pool at the bottom that is nice for swimming and a few jump spots if you’re seeking a thrill. The upper waterfall is smaller than the main waterfall and also features a large pool at the bottom for swimming and a rope swing along with a few jump spots for the thrill seekers! Gozalandia is a must-experience half-day or full day trip during your Rincón vacation. If you’re not sure about adventuring on your own, we highly recommend a guided waterfall tour with our friends at Rd2Happiness.
Not far from the waterfalls, in the neighboring town of Adjuntas, are a few local coffee farms that make a nice stop if you want a delicious lunch and cup of coffee. Some of the coffee farms even offer farm tours! We highly recommend Hacienda Tres Angeles or Sandra Farms.
Other tips:
- Always check the weather forecast before planning a trip to the waterfalls. We advise avoiding the waterfalls if there is, or has been, heavy rain as the river and falls are prone to flash foods.
- We recommend visiting the waterfalls in the morning to potentially avoid rain and crowds.
- Avoid swimming if there is a lot of water moving off the waterfalls and in the river.
2. Head south and check out the beautiful mangrove islands of La Parguera in Lajas.

An hour south of Rincón is La Parguera in the town of Lajas. La Parguera is a lively, scenic fishing village and nature reserve renowned for its mangroves, dozens of offshore cays (like the popular Cayo Caracoles and Mata La Gata), and a unique swimming-allowed bioluminescent bay. During the day, you can either rent a boat, take a water taxi, or hire a private boat to take you out to the mangrove islands where you can snorkel, swim, and float amongst the calm, shallow waters and beautiful reefs of this unique and incredibly important ecosystem. La Parguera is a great day trip that the entire family can enjoy!
After a day of fun in the sun, make a stop in Boqueron on your way back to Rincón to catch the sunset and enjoy delicious seafood & tropical drinks. Or, stick around La Parguera for a nighttime bioluminescent bay tour – one of only three bio bays in Puerto Rico – and the only one where swimming is permitted, allowing you to experience the glowing dinoflagellates up close.
Other tips:
- If you want to avoid the crowds, it’s best to visit La Parguera during a weekday.
- If you’re planning to rent a boat or hire a private boat, we recommend reserving those ahead of time.
- For an incredible guided experience, we highly recommend the Full Day Snorkel & BioBay tours that are offered by our neighbors at Rd2Happiness.
3. Take a drive to the north coast and explore the beautiful cliffs, caves, and beaches of Arecibo.

Located on the north coast of the island, Arecibo is about an hour & a half drive from Rincón. Arecibo is home to an abundance of beautiful beaches, breathtaking cliffs, caves, and rich in culture and history. Cueva del Indio, in the neighborhood of Islote, is a stunning coastal nature reserve known for its high concentration of prehistoric Taíno petroglyphs, dramatic limestone cliffs, and ocean-facing sea caves. The main cave features over 80 documented pre-Columbian petroglyphs carved into the limestone walls by the Taíno people before 1493. Along with the cave, you can explore the rocky coastline, which features natural limestone bridges, arches, and stunning panoramic views.
Check out La Poza del Obispo and El Faro de Arecibo, enjoy a delicious local meal at one of the nearby restaurants, or head inland and explore another popular cave, Cueva Ventana.
Other tips:
- We recommend visiting Cueva del Indio & the sea cliffs during the morning hours, before it gets too hot.
- Wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes suitable for walking on sharp, uneven rock. Some areas along the caves and cliffs require traversing narrow, steep crevices in the rocks and might not be suitable for young children.
- Be aware of the ocean conditions and exercise caution along the sea cliffs and in or near the caves. Check the marine conditions and warnings before entering the ocean for swimming, snorkeling, or surfing.
- Looking for a surf guide? We recommend hiring an experienced guide with Rd2Happiness.
