Going to Puerto Rico? Here are Five Answers to Common Pre-Trip Questions

When you’re ready to take the vacation of a lifetime to beautiful Puerto Rico, no doubt you have a lot of questions you need answered as you plan your travels. For sure, visiting the island feels like traveling to a remote tropical locale – much different than taking your family to, say, Florida or California. But preparing for your vacation is easier than you think – as long as you ask the right questions and know what you’re doing in advance. We’ve prepared a list of the top five most common questions people have as they plan their Puerto Rican vacation – and have provided you with answers that should help you arrive on the island stress-free.

Will I need a passport?

This is often the first question people ask when they’re considering a vacation to Puerto Rico. The answer is no. That’s because Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory, so if you’re a citizen of the United States, you don’t need a passport to visit. You won’t have to worry about exchanging your currency, either – the dollar is used in Puerto Rico. The language spoken there is officially Spanish, but in the urban areas, most people speak some English.

Is it easy to find transportation?

Once you arrive in Puerto Rico, you’ll likely find that transportation is a little lacking. It’s good to plan on renting a car, as walking can be difficult and hot! By renting a car, you’ll be able to see the island at your leisure, and enjoy all the sights and sounds the island has to offer on your own schedule.

What should I pack?

The temperatures in Puerto Rico are tropical yearlong, meaning they stay between 70 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit most of the time. That means you’ll need light, comfortable summer clothing, swimwear, sandals, sunglasses, and don’t forget the sunscreen! If you plan to fully experience the outdoors, hiking gear is a must, including comfortable, broken-in hiking boots. (Puerto Rico has great caves and forests to explore.) Also make sure to pack any prescription medications you might need, for the duration of the trip. You might also want to have a small first aid kit handy.

When should I plan to visit?

The very best time of year to visit Puerto Rico is late spring through summer, which, believe it or not, is the least popular time of year. In the winter, there are lots of additional tourists to contend with, and often prices are higher because of that. In late summer and fall, you might have to contend with rough weather, as that time of year is hurricane season.

What is there to do in Puerto Rico?

Besides surf, swim, sunbathe, sail and spelunk? Lots! Whether you want to simply relax on the beach or go on an epic adventure, Puerto Rico has much to offer. Hike through El Yunque – the only rainforest protected by the United States. Enjoy authentic Puerto Rican rum during a night on the town.
